THE SMALL BUSINESS GUIDE ON GOING GREEN

In this day and age, the pressure the world is putting on us to minimise our carbon footprint and reduce waste is ever increasing. The ‘go green’ movement is really starting to gain momentum. No matter the size of your company, big or small, the combined waste and misused electricity is a staggering amount.

To achieve an environmentally friendly workplace takes time and effort but the rewards can not only benefit the Earth but can also help keep those nasty bills down. Not to mention making you and your coworkers feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that you’re making a difference.

Have you considered installing an in-ground rainwater tank?

Or why not throw up some solar panels or install a waterless toilet which converts your poop into power (yes..it does exist). But if all these ideas are too daunting, here are some easier, simple changes that can make the world of difference.

When it comes to lighting try introducing more natural light, energy saving bulbs or simply turning off unnecessary lights and other power sources. Does anyone really like those soul-sapping fluorescent lights anyway! If you really want to go tech try light sensors or auto shutdown devices.

It may not happen as much as it did in ‘the good ol’ days’ but try using email to send things opposed to paper letters. If you have no choice but to send a letter then use recyclable materials at work goes a long way to reducing your carbon footprint.

Try carpooling as opposed to everyone finding their own way or use means of transport such as trains and buses. If you’re really keen and want to help out the planet plus get fit at the same time jump on your bike, scooter, skateboard or pogo stick for transit to work.
