WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY ON FACEBOOK
Privacy online is a serious matter. Social media has evolved from staying in touch with our loved ones to engaging with brands, shopping online and purchasing services. Without even thinking about it we’re sharing personal information online almost daily.
Ever notice how adverts on Facebook seem to be super relevant? I want to paint a picture of just how much Facebook knows about you.
Let’s say last Friday you checked into your favourite restaurant ordered pasta and posted a photo of your meal. A friend of yours saw the post and got excited because she was in the neighbourhood. So she private messages you “let’s meet up” but you respond that you’ve just headed off to a nearby bar instead.
End of conversation.
What does Facebook know? Your current location, your future location, that your friend is nearby, the exact date the photo was posted, that it was uploaded from an Android mobile device and that you’re a fan of pasta.
Two days later an ad pops up in your newsfeed about a local pasta meal delivery service and you think awesome – how convenient to have meals delivered straight to your door.
You click the link and immediately you are SOLD! You punch in your credit card details, hit the complete purchase button and eagerly await your first delivery.
Now Facebook also knows your billing, shipping and contact details.
But you can take control. There are settings you can adjust on Facebook to protect your identity online
The below Infographic outlines some of the most important ways to protect your privacy on Facebook.
